Unit of assessment 32: Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been significant on Falmouth’s R&I activity overall, and has directly impacted upon our preparations for our submission to REF2021. With 3.8FTE in professional services dedicated to supporting all aspects of the REF return across the institution, the same team were also required to provide support to the PGR community throughout the pandemic and uphold tasks that would have ordinarily been provided by staff within academic departments. Consequentially, several aspects of the REF2021 project plan were delayed. 2.8 of the 3.8FTE have child-caring responsibilities and have been supporting home schooling for the past year. Further support for developing the research culture is provided by the Research & innovation Programme Leads, all of whom have teaching or management responsibilities in addition to their research and innovation related roles. With the need to support the rapid transition to online teaching throughout 2020, Programme leads have had a reduced capacity to support the development of portfolio outputs and to contribute to the finalisation of the impact case studies. Practice research has been significantly compromised by the closure of venues, such as museums and theatres, many of which are collaborators in research in addition to providing facilities. Academic Liaison staff within the Library have also been required to support the transition to an online provision. This has impacted upon their ability to support the gathering of the meta data required for the final REF outputs.
