- This is the first in-depth analysis of one of the key periods of Soviet history which required substantial reinterpretation of Stalinism and the history of formation of the Soviet nation. It required extensive archival research in Russia and, given the scale of the enterprise, took many years to complete. This research underpins a substantially new thesis about the role of aesthetics and representational practices in modern dictatorships and the formation of the Soviet nation after the Second World War. The interdisciplinary character of this volume, which covers politics, literature, film, music, architecture, and visual arts required additional time and effort.
