- The relevance-theoretic, procedural analysis that informs the approach of Referring Expressions provides the basis for a study which advances the understanding of reference and of procedurally encoded meaning. The cognitively grounded analysis presents a study which not only relates the referring function of an expression to its encoded meaning, but also offers an original account that links referring expression choice to the communication of a speaker’s attitude and emotions. Further, the argument extends analysis of reference, taking account of a range of literary and non-literary texts to demonstrate how a pragmatic analysis of form can account for emerging stylistic effects.
