- The book 学問としての翻訳 (Translation as an Academic Discipline) asks how and why academic disciplines emerge in the world. Specifically, it considers translation research and translation studies in Japan. After summarizing the history of the discipline in Britain and other parts of Europe in the 1980s and asking why it did not take off in Japan despite its long history and tradition of practical translation, the book traces an alternative history through two translation magazines published between 1970 and 2000, with in-depth interviews with writers, translators, and editors.
