- This monograph synthesises the results of twenty years of focused study of John Clare. It is based on detailed research into Clare’s complex manuscript legacy, including archival sources, and reveals the difficult editorial problems presented by his work. Kövesi’s unique knowledge of the politics of editing allows him to propose a new methodology for future presentations of Clare’s textual life. The book addresses the class insensitivity and narrowness of existing ‘green’ readings of Clare, reconsidering the political implications of Clare’s representation of labour. It also establishes the value to critical ways of thinking of creative responses to Clare.
