- English abstract
- The socio-cultural contexts for the interaction of the Gaelic learned classes with the power elite in Southwest Ulster - North Connacht during a period of socio-political change (1560-1730) is analysed, including a discussion of patronage and Irish poetry, with a focus on the Gaelic Maguire family, combined with an edition of two praise poems in honour of Brian Maguire - 'Cnoc os cnocaibh Cnoc Ninne' and 'Tarla lá le Sliabhradh sinn'. Important issues of cultural responses to pivotal periods in demise culture and ethnic conflict that was progressively eroding the patron's regional dominance and political status are equally dealt with.
