- This portfolio comprises critical editions of Debussy’s Piano Trio and early cello pieces; a re-edition of his two books of Préludes; and four book chapters. Its purpose is to stimulate a reassessment of the ways Debussy’s music is perceived, taught and edited internationally, with the goal of fostering more confident and informed performance: the chapter ‘Inside rather than under the composer’s skin: another tilt at being “authentic”’ thus encapsulates the core of the research enquiry.
To this end, the editions enhance the repertoire by (a) presenting obscure works in accurate editions, (b) correcting historical misperceptions; (c) addressing problems relating to previous editions; (d) updating a 1985 edition of a core repertoire work, Debussy’s Préludes, to reflect the latest research.
The edition of the chamber music is the first to place the Trio in the ‘Russian’ context of its creation, and to delineate the differing redactions and interpretations of its surviving sources. The accompanying critical material offers a musical reassessment in the context of longstanding prejudice about Debussy’s juvenilia, notably addressing questions of modality that bear importantly on his developing musical idiom. The book chapter ‘The Œuvres complètes de Claude Debussy’ draws together new editions and reeditions with a reflective survey of editorial practice, progress and influence over three decades.
The chapters ‘En blanc et noir et “le souci des proportions”’ and ‘Un tas de petites choses’ likewise position core repertoire along less-known works, here in the context of piano duet/duo repertoire: the latter brings to public attention a duet suite by Caplet, closely connected with Debussy and his family. All these publications have been developed and communicated through an international programme of performance, teaching and advocacy, advancing the research aims by bringing the music and its performing traditions to an expanded worldwide audience.
