- Seeking new ways of conveying an embodied experience of violent alienation, The Crossing forms an investigation into how the filmmaker can transmit the testimonies of sex trafficking survivors. With an annual black market trade of $150 billion, 25 million people are trafficked each year, a third of which are children. The Crossing seeks to harness the transformative opportunity of emerging media and new interdisciplinary workflows to surface their unheard voice. Embracing immersive, hyper and virtual realities, visual montage and a rhizomic narrative structure framed by a platform agile soundscape. The
Crossing evokes new and deeper understandings of the ‘Loverboy method’ used by traffickers and the long-term psychological trauma of survivors.
Underpinned by six years extensive research into the experiential properties of emerging media and platforms, Patel seeks to bridge the personal and collective dimensions through innovative combinations of creative technologies, narrative and software. The multi award winning project has been widely screened on multiple platforms: for audience reach (40 festivals and exhibitions including Glastonbury Festival, 200,000 and Sheffield International Documentary Film Festival, 20,000);
worldwide (Mumbai, New York, Los Angeles, Madrid, Germany, Bangalore and UK); with multiple stakeholders (Trafficking Foundation, Encounters Film, Cambridge Academic Partnership); industry workshops (the ESoDoc and Collusion) and industry partners (Dame Emma Thompson, Special Treats and The Helicopter Girls).
Evidencing attitudinal change in young people towards sex trafficking, The Crossing has generated a further 3 innovative collaborations. Including a partnership with Essex Police to create an immersive narrative led VR experience for knife crime prevention.. The film is also used as part of the First Responder and Specialist Investigator training by the NPCC Modern Slavery & Organised Crime Unit and as part of the Victim Navigator Program of the Justice and Care Organisation for deployed staff who offer strategic advice to law enforcement and support potential victims.
