- Double-weighted statement
- The book was written over approximately a decade and covers a broad range of themes related to the history of smell, including religion, medicine, gender, race and perfume history. The chronology covered is also extensive, from ancient to modern, and archival and original research fed into the majority of the chapters. Given the amount of work published in the field of sensory studies in the last two decades, the literature review required for each chapter was also extensive.
