- This edition of all four poems by the Gawain poet is substantive (c.328,000 words) and provides a root-and-branch revision of earlier editing and textual criticism: it is the first edition to apply metrical criteria to the establishment of the text; the general introduction (i-xxxiv) and the introductions to each of the poems (5-22; 85-93; 197-205; 239-258) provide fresh interpretative frameworks; the foot glosses and glossary (pp. 801-988) present numerous advances on earlier editions; the extensive explanatory notes (pp. 407-764) shed new light on sources and contexts.
