- Beyond Slavery and Abolition is a substantial piece of scholarship, researched between 2011 and 2017. It represents a significant (indeed award winning) intervention in the fields of British history and the history of slavery, running to over 100,000 words in length. It is based on substantial archival research and references several hundred rare printed and manuscript items alongside engagement with a wide range of historiography and deep analysis of over a dozen book-length core primary sources. The scope of archival research and amount of time involved was far in excess of two articles.
