- Focusing on the hitherto neglected Tudor conquest and colonisation of Boulogne in the mid-sixteenth century, this monograph significantly revises our understanding of the emergence of the early modern English (later British Empire). As well as being based on extensive research in central and local archives on both sides of the Channel, it draws on wide-ranging secondary reading relating to different historical eras and parts of the globe in order to situate the development of the colony at Boulogne within the wider context of English colonial projects from medieval France to early modern Ireland and America.
