- This is a digital edition of an influential work of Victorian exploration, published by Livingstone Online (a peer-reviewed digital library). It contains critically-encoded transcriptions of the 1100-page Missionary Travels manuscript and 80,000 words of critical materials. Five research essays by Justin Livingstone outline the edition’s methodologies, trace the manuscript’s collaborative production, and analyse the editorial processes that shaped it for publication. Using digital tools to investigate expeditionary literature, the edition opens connections between digital humanities and travel writing studies. It was supported by several funders (including the MHRA) and has received the seal of the MLA’s Committee on Scholarly Editions.

- Livingstone’s Missionary Travels Manuscript (1857): A Critical Edition is one of several manuscript-based editions hosted on the larger digital project, Livingstone Online. The Missionary Travels edition – the only part of Livingstone Online being submitted to this REF exercise – can be accessed from the “In His Own Words” section of the Livingstone Online website or directly via the following link: https://livingstoneonline.org/in-his-own-words/missionary-travels-manuscript/livingstones-missionary-travels-manuscript-1857. From the edition homepage, the complete contents can be accessed using the dropdown menu entitled “Critical Edition – Table of Contents”.
The “Edition Guide” (contained in the “Prefatory Materials” section) provides an overview of all edition materials. The key contributions to scholarship are contained in the “Critical Essays” section, which consists of five critical and contextual pieces that, in turn, outline the edition’s underlying methodologies, trace the collaborative literary production of Missionary Travels, and engage in close analysis of the textual and material characteristics of the manuscript. The primary editorial work, which consists of the annotated 1100-page manuscript of Missionary Travels, can be consulted under the title “Images & Transcriptions of the Manuscript, 1857” (contained in the “Images and Texts” section). Clicking on the camera icon will open a manuscript; once a manuscript is open, the “transcription” button at the top of the screen will display the critically-edited transcription. All editorial annotations are also available in a separate “Glossary of Key Terms” (contained in the “Supporting Materials” section).
This was jointly directed by Justin D. Livingstone and Adrian S. Wisnicki (director of Livingstone Online), who shared responsibility for project development and for managing the transcription team. The scholarship was undertaken by Justin Livingstone, who wrote all five critical essays and all annotations for the edited manuscripts. The “Project History” (see “Supporting Materials”), which provides a detailed account of the work underlying the edition, was co-authored by both directors.
