- This book involved sustained research effort, engaging over a four-year period with under-researched, complex archives; primary sources (performance remnants, unpublished plays) were consulted at the John Rylands, Cadbury, V&A and Brotherton libraries, as well as the National Library of Scotland and the British Library. Much of the research involved a piecing together of ‘lost’ plays by comparing newspaper reviews, partial scripts, prompt copies, snippets of recordings, and diary reflections. It represents the substantial published output of the broader British Academy-funded project which involved a collaboration with the Electrotheatre Stanislavsky in Moscow, which were visited in 2015.
