- Planning Cities with Nature: Theories, Strategies and Method is an edited book by Lemes and Mell (2019, Springer). Lemes co-edited this work, co-wrote the introduction, contributed two single authored chapters and one co-authored chapter, as well as peer-reviewed 16 out of the 19 chapters.
Lemes wrote ‘Green Wedges: The Resilience of a Planning Idea’ (pp.17-27) and ‘Towards a Spatial Planning Framework for the Re-naturing of Cities’(pp 81-95)
Lemes co-authored a third chapter ‘Re-naturing our Future Cities’ (pp. 281- 285)
The book arose out of a Newton Fund Programme project led by Lemes in collaboration with Universidade Federal de Goias, Brazil. The work provides key thinking on planning cities in balance with nature, aiming not only at advancement of science and research, but also at impacting on the planning of contemporary cities and regions. Although it started with UK and Brazilian researchers collaboration, geographic and thematic scope was broden by including contribution from other researchers. In total, the book brings together 38 experts from a range of disciplines, srch as Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, Geography, Green Infrastructure, etc. Case studies from developed and developing countries alike are analysed, providing a comprehensive panorama on the topic. These range from the UK, Brazil, Finland, China, India, among others. The book enables readers to learn from best practice and advances the current theoretical and empirical understanding in the field. It also offers valuable insights into how planners and policymakers can apply this knowledge to their own cities and regions, exploring top-down, bottom-up and mixed mechanisms for the systemic re-naturing of planned and existing cities.
