- Double-weighted statement
- This book is the culmination of ten years of research. It considers its central theme in considerable depth from a range of different perspectives, each approximately equivalent in length and research effort to an article. It required new combinations of textual and archaeological evidence, each of which necessitated working through a large body of primary sources and excavation reports, to pick out relevant examples. It advances a new and complex thesis that crosses multiple subdisciplines, and required significant research in each of them.
