- This work is the first to develop numerical models to compute the slipstreams of freight trains, which allows further development of the freight train industry and its operations and thus has a significant environmental and public impact (http://www.railtechnologymagazine.com/Comment/the-importance-of-slipstream-safety). Research groups in Australia, China and the UK have used these models in their work (e.g. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jweia.2017.07.008) and they are likely to be implemented in the EU code for train acceptance (Principal Aerodynamics Engineer, RSSB). Two EPSRC grants (EP/N004213/1 and EP/M012581/1) and one EU grant (EU/701693) have been awarded to explore different aspects of this original work and widen the impact.
