- Future optical networks must allow a single network infrastructure to simultaneously and dynamically support multiple independent networks, such as 5G fronthaul/backhaul or dedicated low-latency networks. Multi-level, sub-wavelength network virtualisation (multiple channels on a single wavelength) can offer cost effectiveness due to efficient wavelength use. This work presents the first fully real-time experimental demonstration of a soft-reconfigurable optical add drop multiplexer (soft-ROADM) capable of dynamically switching/routing multi-level sub-wavelength channels, proving the feasibility of the technology. This work was presented by invitation at SPIN 2018 conference, Amity University, India.
