- In 2012 I was commissioned by the Poetry Translation Centre (PTC) to work, with the Persian scholar Elhum Shakerifar, in preparing translations/versions of the poetry of the exiled Iranian writer, Azita Ghahreman. In 2013 the PTC published these as a pamphlet of Ghahreman‘s work and Ghahreman, Shakerifar and I took part in an Arts Council funded tour of Persian Poets reading and discussing the poems at venues across Britain. We continued to work together over following years which resulted in this full collection, published jointly by Bloodaxe Books and the PTC. The book received a PEN Translation Award and was shortlisted for the Warwick Women-in-Translation prize. Ghahreman has lived in exile in Sweden for a number of years. This collection covers three decades of her publishing life. Therefore, it is various in its subject matter and includes poems written at times of great distress and turmoil, both poems from prison and poems written out of her depression. Her poetry is political, sometimes directly and sometimes allegorically expressed. At the same time, she is a writer who delights in the surreal, her work can be playful and mysterious. More personally, she writes of passion and in detail of friendships and family life. This collection represents the shifts in subject matter, mood and voice which have shaped Ghahreman’s work over several decades.
