- This 262-page monograph is the product of 10 years extended research effort across two continents and in three languages, exploring 116 years of a migrant community as both microhistory and cross-border, cross-region case-study. It is based on extensive research in previously unexplored English, Chinese and Burmese-language archives and personal collections in Myanmar, Britain, China, India and Singapore, and many months of fieldwork in the Chinese communities across Myanmar, their homelands in southwest and southeast China, and their diaspora communities in Southeast Asia, interviewing families and members of grassroots associations, and investigating communal institutions such as temples, cemeteries and vernacular schools.
