- This research explores infographic visual mapping techniques to communicate complex cultural content and concepts. In this instance, how a history of dance music and rave culture can be visualised in a single conceptual diagram. Rejecting traditional documentary techniques to narrate histories this practice-based research repurposes field theory (Bourdieu, Distinctions, 1984) to map people, places, and events (clubs, DJs, musicians, free parties, sound systems, labels, radio stations) through their spatial, temporal and conceptual relationships. The conceptual diagram reassembles and presents information from extensive research of primary and secondary sources conducted by Mitchell: key texts documenting the history of rave; archival material and the shared personal memories now available on the internet which offer alternatives to the (often) biased creation myths perpetuated by many “official” histories; and interviews and consultation with several of the scene’s experts (Park, G. & Wilson, G.). The research analysed by Mitchell and co-designed with Quail (Dorothy), was informed by Mitchell’s supporting research questioning the enduring relevance and value of infographics as a means to communicate complex cultural and social issues published through the 2CO International Design Conference network; and was advanced through the design of an interactive installation, exhibition and website ClubTogether (2019) which allowed the public to participate with the research and enrich the methodology by sharing memories of rave culture. Principally disseminated through the Acid House Blueprint screen-print bought by over 5000 people, in over 30 countries across 6 continents, stimulating discussion from many of the main living protagonists of the culture; receiving press coverage in Resident Advisor, Wire, BBC 6 Music; and sold at Design Museum’s Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers exhibition. The research has been presented within academia at the 2CO Everyday symposium and to the public in the self-curated ClubTogether exhibitions, at Good Night: Energy Flash exhibition, Seoul, South Korea.
