- Guillot has been a pioneer and principal exponent of research in the new field of Audiovisual Translation (AVT) as Cross-and-Intercultural Mediation showcased in this Multilingua Special issue, which she proposed and was main editor. Her editing (and introduction) of the special issue plus her single authored article are submitted. This work indicates that while the dissemination of cultural products on a global scale has reached unprecedented levels, our understanding of the processes of interlingual mediation through AVT has lagged behind. The volume capitalizes on recent input from pragmatics and cross-cultural pragmatics in AVT research to put this right, and gives work in this new domain impetus, visibility and reliability. This is the first research volume to showcase pragmatics as a leading disciplinary drive in AVT and cross-cultural representation and intercultural mediation. It has been an integral part of Guillot’s effort to develop the field’s methodological dependability and robustness and, conversely, to give pragmatics, sociopragmatics/ linguistics and other key disciplines like film studies the benefit of its own perspectives and understanding of telecinematic text across languages. The Multilingua volume is one of the deliverables for the AHRC Films in Translation – Tapping the Power of Foreign films: Audiovisual Translation as Cross-cultural Mediation project (AH/N007026/1) led by Guillot as PI to coordinate and develop research in this emergent domain (with Desilla as co-investigator).
Guillot and another leading AVT figure/co-editor Pavesi’s opening critical overview across the two AVT modalities of subtitling and dubbing (their respective specialism) doubles up as agenda for further research. Guillot’s single authored article takes further her research on AVT as a medium of expression in its own right with an early exploration of the respective potential for representation of different types of languages, with application to subtitling and Romance and Germanic languages. This is a first for the field.
