- Double-weighted statement
- Joe Cutler’s _Karembeu’s Guide to the Complete Defensive Midfielder_ and _Hawaii Hawaii Hawaii_ are two substantial music compositions exploring related research concerns. _Karembeu’s Guide_ is a c. 25-minute work for ten-piece ensemble. _Hawaii_ is a c. 19-minute work for saxophone soloist and orchestra. Each work could be submitted as an individual output, but the related nature of the compositional research involved, each informing the other, means that it makes sense for them to be considered together as a single, large-scale statement of research.

- Additional information
- Joe Cutler’s _Karembeu’s Guide to the Complete Defensive Midfielder_ and _Hawaii Hawaii Hawaii_ are two related music compositions that explore strategies for combining musicians from classical and jazz/improvising performing traditions, within a post-genre compositional aesthetic which foregrounds elements from contemporary classical, jazz and post-minimalism. The two works combine musicians from different performing traditions in unusual ways, re-framing them in such a way that allows them to sit outside the conventions of genre.
In these pieces, Cutler developed his technique of ‘directed improvisation’, creating structures that clearly imply improvisational possibilities for the soloists. In _Karembeu’s Guide_ (2015), the aim is to create a musical structure which is fixed enough to define the overall identity of the piece, whilst open enough to allow navigational space for two improvising soloists. In _Hawaii_ (2019) the aim is to create a work that effectively utilizes the performative qualities of the soloist, Trish Clowes, one of the UK’s foremost jazz/improvising saxophonists, alongside a classical orchestra, whilst retaining an authentic compositional voice.
The research embedded within these compositions has been disseminated as follows: _Karembeu’s Guide_ (Chester Music) was winning work in Jazz Category of 2016 British Composer Awards; performed three times (Cheltenham International Music Festival, MAC Birmingham, Shrewsbury); four broadcasts on BBC Radio 3; CD release on NMC, reaching no.10 in Classical Specialist Charts, and receiving many favourable reviews (inc. _The Times_, _Gramophone_, etc.). _Hawaii_ (Composers Edition) was commissioned by BBC Radio 3. It was finalist in large orchestral category of 2020 Ivor Novello Composers Awards; premiered at London South Bank Centre by Clowes and the BBC Concert Orchestra; two broadcasts on BBC Radio 3; CD released on Birmingham Record Company and receiving reviews in _The Times_, _Guardian_, _The Sunday Times_, _BBC Music Magazine_.
