- The paper describes the evaluation of a statistical data-driven approach to replace physics-based modelling of wave prediction. The work was a by-product of an Industrial CASE studentship which focused on the reliability of UK flood defences, sponsored by HR Wallingford who are instrumental in the development of national flood risk science. The work has importance because the use of an approach familiar in the field of financial statistics has been transferred into that of wave climate hindcasting. This allows the optimisation of wave monitoring and localised statistical wave climate predictions essential for flood defence, coastal management and maritime operations.
