- This output (130,000 words) required sustained research effort into primary materials which were widely dispersed, difficult to decipher and interpret (including unsorted, unpublished correspondence and manuscripts of Joyce and his circle). Funding from Leverhulme enabled visits to libraries with essential materials in Yale, Cornell, Buffalo, New York, Milwaukee, Carbondale and London over a three-month period. One month was spent developing skills in digital manuscript collation which enabled the piecing together of archival findings and the writing of an account of the writing and social processes behind the composition and production of Ulysses.
