- This scholarly edition (472 pages), the second in a six-volume series, provides fully annotated texts of 242 letters newly transcribed from original manuscripts. About 75% have not been published before. The letters, drawn from archives all over the world, represent texts at different stages of composition. Work involved identification, dating, decisions about which text to print, and biographical, historical, and literary research for the explanatory notes. The output includes a critical introduction; a chronology; full textual apparatus; appendices containing extra-literary documents (e.g. book contracts, promissory notes); and an index. It took eight years of archival and scholarly labour to complete.
