- This edition of primary sources brings together nearly two hundred of Lady Anne Bacon’s extant letters, scattered through repositories worldwide. Anne’s handwriting has been an obstacle to past work, previously described as ‘hardly legible’; only through a sustained research effort has it been possible to decipher the handwriting and make it accessible through this critical edition. The editing process was made more complex and extended by correspondence in multiple languages beyond English (French, Latin, Greek and Hebrew), which required translation. Given the letters’ relevance to diverse fields, detailed annotations and a lengthy introduction of over 18,000 words has been provided.
