- Exotic Animals is a longer-form output, a monograph resulting from a sustained period of research; it comprises seven substantial chapters, and an introduction and conclusion (340 pages). The work, although focusing primarily on the Medici court (1532-1737), also examines the role of animals in the life of the early modern court in wider European and non-Western settings. Research for the book thus involved the analysis and examination of a large body of material – archival documents, printed primary and secondary sources in different languages, and diverse visual material – and it presents critical insights from a range of disciplinary standpoints.
