- The book provides an extended examination of an undocumented subject - the fairground frontage. It is an outcome of sustained fieldwork between 2010-17, undertaken at key travelling fairs in the UK, and funded by an RIBA Research Award (2012). It involved participant observation at multiple sites and interviews with a wide range of actors from travelling show-families, local and national officials. These empirical examples are brought into contact with historical archival material from the National Fairground and Circus Archive at the University of Sheffield, as well as private collections.
