- This book brings together an extensive and varied collection of Davies’s written and spoken-word items for the first time. Spanning eight decades of the composer’s life, from 1949 to 2015, this collection offers a balanced selection of Davies’s articles and essays, speeches and lectures, interviews, radio broadcasts, programme notes, tributes and letters to newspapers. A number of items are published for the first time, including an article from Davies himself, commissioned especially for this book, and several BBC radio broadcast interviews and talks from the 1960s. Subjects range widely from specific compositional concerns and other music-related issues, to commentaries that reveal the composer’s interest in art and architecture, literature, popular culture, education, religion, politics and the environment. These writings promote a variegated view of the composer and attest to a lively, passionate, intelligent, thought-provoking and, on occasion, provocative commentator.
As editor, Jones initiated the project, wrote the proposal, selected the items, edited Davies’s texts, transcribed and edited specific items from broadcast recordings held in the British Library Sound Archive, provided chronologies for each of the three main sections, annotated each of the 74 items with footnotes and source information, wrote the introductory essay, compiled the bibliography, responded to questions at copyediting and proofreading stages, prepared the index and music examples, and liaised with the composer, the Peter Maxwell Davies Trust and various publishers and individuals.
