- The first substantial exploration in English of the heterogeneous work of this important but neglected critical theorist, Seigfried Kracauer. Informed by extended periods of archival work in Germany, the book examines unpublished documents and correspondence as well as numerous untranslated writings. Working in a transdisciplinary manner and highlighting central themes, key concepts and recurrent motifs, it provides original and close readings of Kracauer’s principal texts from earliest writings in Germany to his post-war studies of film theory and history composed in New York. The book demonstrates the case for Kracauer’s increasing relevance for cultural critique today.
