- The research rationale for this recording was to explore various eighteenth-century theories of tempo, both in relating Preludes to Fugues and, in some cases, in relating successive pairs to one other. The theoretical possibilities derive from
both an examination of contemporary sources and a consideration of the interpretations of recent researchers. The resulting tempo relations reflect experimentation in preparatory performances, and within the recording process itself. The accompanying booklet provides comprehensive discussion of the tempo issues
