- The analysis of parody in both print and stage spectacle, two intrinsically related but highly differing formats, demanded research across a wide range of different materials. Between 2012 and 2019, textual and musical sources, many unpublished, were consulted during extended periods of research in five different Parisian archives. Over 2000 pages of manuscript text (including libretti and censorship records), musical manuscripts, and print runs of over 30 illustrated periodicals (1860–1900), were examined. The original theoretical framework required to interpret these materials required extensive interdisciplinary reading and construction over a considerable period of time.
