- This practice-based performance research considers the classical guitar (best known as a solo instrument) in a concerto context, through the performance of three especially written works by the composers William Lovelady, Andy Scott, and David Gordon. This research is also concerned with performer-composer collaboration and, as two of the works are double concertos, performer collaboration and ongoing research into the role of the guitar in an ensemble context.
These collaborations address both purely musical concerns (e.g. instrumental performance practicalities, ensemble balance), aesthetic concerns in developing the capabilities and perception of the classical guitar in a concerto context, and a broader aim to add to a repertoire dominated by one work (Joaquín Rodrigo’s ‘Concierto de Aranjeuz’). Furthermore, these works, all written by composers situated within classical music, jazz, and more commercial music traditions, consider the dual role of the guitar within classical and popular music, building on my long association with Classic FM.
Input into the Scott and Gordon was more extensive with revisions to orchestral density, balance, and instrumental virtuosity (particularly in Scott’s cadenza). As Lovelady is a guitarist this conversation was focused on the aesthetic relationship between the soloists and ensemble. Here and in the Gordon, we had extensive workshop and rehearsals for the soloists to explore these musical interactions and the potential connections, given the instrumentation, to folk music.
Craig Ogden premiered all three of these works: William Lovelady’s double concerto in June 2015 with Tamsin Waley-Cohen (violin), David Curtis (conductor), and the Orchestra of the Swan; Andy Scott’s concerto in November 2017 with Nick Ward (leader) and the Northern Chamber Orchestra; and David Gordon’s ‘Il Filo’ in August 2019 with Miloš Milivojević (accordion), David Juritz (leader), and the Burton Bradstock Festival Orchestra. ‘Il Filo’ will be commercially recorded in late 2021 having been delayed due to COVD-19.
