- The article considers methodological questions affecting a field which straddles the divides between German history, theatre studies and literary criticism. It examines in particular how a conception of Nazi theatre as the ultimate ‘other’ has tended to obscure the extensive connections existing both to the Austro-German stage pre-1933 and post-1945. It thus argues that Nazi theatre should be contextualized but, at the same time, that it needs to be broken down into regional case studies, given the lack of uniformity of Nazi cultural policy and the polycratic nature of the regime.
