- This 304-page monograph studies an unusually long chronological period, crossing the traditional boundary between medieval and early modern studies, providing new insights into both fields. Utilising over 5,000 leases and licenses, over 1,000 inquisitions post mortem, over 1,000 account rolls, surveys and rentals, and over 500 wills and inventories, it shows how every level of rural society responded to economic and social upheaval over three centuries. This long chronological span and the complex, varied nature of the source material enable new perspectives into path dependency and institutional economics during the transition from feudalism to capitalism.
