- This empirically-grounded theory of software design accounts for why software design is complex, and how experts effectively manage the process and complexity. This characterisation helps to explain why existing software engineering methodology does not always work, and what an effective ‘design mindset’ is, with implications for current practice. The paper was presented at an international venue, the Psychology of Programming Interest Group and recently discussed by Jolak et al (2020), in the context of globally distributed software engineering.
