Lawrence Zeegen – 2015
This book represented the culmination of extensive research in the archives of Ladybird Books held in the Special Collections of the University of Reading. Working closely with Claire Wooldridge and Danni Corfield, and also using the oral testimony of former Ladybird illustrators and writers, Zeegen assembled a comprehensive history of the Ladybird books for children from their origins in the early 1940s up to their latest manifestations in the digital era. Along the way, the changing images, attitudes and mores of postwar Britain were also reflected and documented, making the books a mirror of contemporary society and its attitudes towards children and education.
