- The paper reports results from a collaborative EPSRC funded project, EP/K008781/1, to develop a novel nowcasting and forecasting service for communications with commercial airlines operating over the polar routes. This will offer significant cost savings to the airlines involved. The project has now moved on to incorporate the techniques into the ionospheric model being developed under the NERC funded Space Weather Instrumentation, Measurement, Modelling and Risk: Ionosphere (SWIMMR-I) project (£1.1M) to be run as a service by the Met Office’s Space Weather Operations Centre.
