- The apparently short chronology of this book belies that it took at least triple that time to research: it involved many visits to archives, collation of scattered or hidden primary sources, and extensive cross-disciplinary reading. It examines a deep and long cultural history in relation to a history of flight up to the present day, with transnational framing. Combining materials from several centuries of literary history, cultural history, material and visual history and the history of science, it provides a thematic study of an object which takes off from its eighteenth-century focal point into a high-flying history of ideas.
