- This work presents a novel asymptotic analysis of an elastic instability associated with partial wrinkling of a uniformly stretched circular thin elastic plate subjected to a transverse pressure. In particular, the dependence of this critical pressure on the initial level of pre-stress, as well as other mechanical/geometrical characteristics, is captured by closed-form formulae. This study was inspired by my previous work (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.mechrescom.2012.09.005) on an EPSRC-funded research project concerned with multiscale asymptotics for partial wrinkling of thin films in tension. The methodology proposed in this paper was subsequently extended to settle several related open questions (e.g., https://doi.org/10.1007/s10659-016-9584-3 and https://doi.org/10.1007/s10659-017-9652-3).
