- In addition to the chapters published within the collection, Hubner and Leaning (along with Manning, a third editor from the unit who retired during the period) made demonstrable contributions through sustained collaboration within the editing team and externally among international colleagues throughout the process – from the early research stages of origination and planning for the international and interdisciplinary symposium through to publication and dissemination of the edited collection. During the initial phase key questions and issues were developed and outlined in the call for papers and selection process for a symposium at Winchester which included contributions by international speakers from a broad range of disciplines, including architecture, art, creative writing and history, as well as film, literature, media, and cultural studies. Ideas for the edited volume evolved to emphasise the diverse range of methodological approaches, the interdisciplinary literature the work draws upon, critiques and develops, and the international scope. Understanding these broad intellectual contexts was vital for the structuring and peer-reviewing processes of the volume, so as to make an original and lasting intervention by presenting a cross-cultural, cross-media and trans-disciplinary approach. These themes were made explicit in an Introduction jointly written by the editors to frame the international and interdisciplinary nature of the collection, and to respond to the widespread and diverse interest in the project from the public (60 members of which attended the symposium), international press (including Times of India, South China Morning Post and The Huffington Post), and media (BBC Radio 4, the flagship news programme on BBC World Service, ITV and RTE1 in the Republic of Ireland). Each submission was provided with a detailed reader’s report, and the volume went through further external and internal review prior to formal copy-editing. Final detailed checks of formatting, proofreading and content were also done by the editors.
