- This 400-page book offers the first in-depth study of tactical command and combat during the British Army's campaign in Northern Ireland. Drawing upon extensive interviews with former soldiers, archival sources including unpublished diaries/log-books, this book examines in considerable depth soldiers' behaviour, including formal and informal structures of command and leadership at the small-unit level, during the most violent period of the Troubles. The scope of this project required a lengthy and sustained research effort. The value and complexity of the research was also increased by its deep engagement with other literatures, including, sociology, anthropology, criminology, and psychology.
