- This work presents the development of UK's first closed-loop ultra-precision freeform machining and measurement platform. A dedicative controller with GUI control panel was self-developed to address the challenges in hardware integration and data synchronisation between machine tool, fast-tool-servo and optical measurement systems. This work led to the award of a £804k EPSRC strategic equipment (ultra-precision five-axis freeform generator, EP/S033300/1), which will be equipped with the on-machine measurement system (sub-nanometric resolution). This UKs unique machining capability led to close partnership with world-leading optics manufacturer QIOPTIQ and a follow-on £450k STFC-IPS project on fast prototyping of large freeform-mirrors applied in aerospace (ST/V001280/1).
