- The Truth is Always Grey is a “longer-form output” (120,000 words) that required five years of research in multiple countries. Close visual analysis of paintings were examined in situ. The project necessitated travel to museums in multiple cities in Italy, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United States. The book’s analysis of the history of grey painting within industrial modernism also required research into its precursors. This involved research into Medieval, Renaissance and Romantic uses of grey painting. While much of this research was not included in the final book, it informs the argument, structure and innovation of the work.
