- This monograph (almost 200,000 words) is based on 10 years of sustained research effort. Its focus on alabaster as a material and its trans-European scope make it the first book of its kind. Its completion involved the identification and analysis of a large body of scholarly and primary material in 7 European languages and extensive field work (multiple trips to 10 European countries and the USA, and visits to over 100 sites). Over 150 works are explored in differing contexts using historical, technical and geological perspectives as well as considering the status and meanings invested in this material.
