- Furfural is a promising biomass-derived starting material from which precursors for the chemical industry can be made; the first step being hydrogenation. Funded by EPSRC (EP/M005186/1), this ground breaking research, demonstrated selective hydrogenation without using copper chromate, a widely-used industrial catalyst requiring harsh conditions and producing toxic chromic oxide.
