- The output presents a new approach to the study of the early modern world by rejecting the universality of empire and introducing the concept of non-imperial states. Examining internal dynamics, it considers the role of territoriality, language, and space in the process. The monograph is the result of a decade of work. It includes research in archives and libraries in India and the assessment of a large array of sources. In particular, it presents a substantial effort to access a large array of primary and secondary materials, manuscripts and printed, of various genres, in Persian, Marathi, Urdu, and Arabic.
