- This monograph, which received the international BRAIS De Gruyter Prize, represents a substantial and original piece of scholarship. It provides a new perspective on a cause célèbre of Christian-Muslim relations and anti-colonial activism in the Middle East. Its methods are interdisciplinary, critically inter-relating opposing perspectives in political history and religious studies through philological and philosophical analysis. It radically re-appraises existing literatures through engagement with extensive primary materials in four languages (Arabic, English, French, German) on topics ranging from jurisprudence to mysticism. These include thousands of archival documents, sourced from nine collections across five countries, and difficult to obtain print publications.
