- This is a full scholarly edition and translation of an under-scrutinised 1422 female-authored text. The edition includes a 20,000-word introduction to both text and its socio-religious historico-literary contexts, representing six years of original research, study and transcription of the three extant manuscript copies. This fully annotated edition provides page-by-page commentary on textual parities and contrasts, borrowings and lexical clarifications, as well as variants between manuscript copies. It has rendered this text fully accessible to all readers for the first time and demonstrates the text’s crucial importance to our better understanding of medieval women’s complex literary cultures in fifteenth-century England.
